Black Widow Spiders (Latrodectus mactans)
Life Cycle


Egg sacs are brown, long, oval and are usually
bigger than the mother. They hold
anywhere from 20 to 900 eggs. They have a 20 day incubation period. It takes two to three months
for them to grow to their adult size. After the
female lays her eggs, she dies.







Interesting Facts


Habitat: Black widows are found around wood piles,
boxes, meter boxes, or any unbothered places.
Where it is found in the World: It is found
worldwide, mostly in the warm or hotter regions
of every state in the U.S. except Hawaii and
Alaska.
What it eats: Black Widows eat anything captured
in its web. Anything from insects and centipedes, to spiders. After mating, the female feeds upon the
male, which is how they get their name, Black Widow.









Description


The females are usually about 1.3 cm long and has microscopic hairs all over the body. The female is marked with a red hourglass on its abdomen. The male is smaller than the female and has four pairs of red marks on its abdomen.
The bite of a black widow is poisonous and sometimes fatal if victim is not treated immediately by a doctor. Only the females are dangerous. And they only bite if agitated.

Black Widow

Black Widows bite
And they sometimes are deadly.
They hide out of sight
Until for their prey they are ready.

The males are small,
The females much larger.
Which means the males
Could not possibly be in charge of her.
